From the journal of J. Winston Phelps, January 26, 1904

8 pm—remarkable day!—hardly know where to begin—when trial opened this am saw Shad sitting in back row trying to look inconspicuous—hard to do in his case—we talked during recess—Shad said he just wanted to see things for himself, etc, so I went about my business with Jakes—think I nailed the little bastard & jury will hate him—thats what I want—if jurors hate Jakes theyll hate Masterson too & Addie will prevail.

After adjournment Shad came up & introduced me to friend of his—tall bearded fellow dressed in bohemian fashion wearing floppy hat—reminded me of art professor Id known, in every sense of the word, at Harvard—three of us chatting away when Shad says, “Im guessing you dont recognize my friend”—“no, I dont,” says I—then the “professor” speaks up in a different voice & says, “It is a pleasure to meet you once again, Mr. Phelps. You perhaps remember me from the affair of the Secret Alliance”—damn but I nearly soiled my pants—Sherlock Holmes!

After reminiscing about Alliance & Mary McGinty & late Wm McKinley13 Holmes asked to see the photo of Addie—assured me his interest not prurient (as tho I would care!)—once I brought the picture he took out a small ruler & measured it very carefully—after a long pause he says, very mysteriously, “I doubt this is a Kodak”—asked what he meant but he would say no more.

Holmes said hed be back in the morning to hear Addies testimony—told him shes one of most extraordinary people Ive ever met—“I have no doubt she is extraordinary,” he says, smiling like the proverbial Cheshire cat, “but what I do not know, Mr. Phelps, is whether she is extraordinary in a good or a bad way”—cant say I disagree.
