8 pmâremarkable day!âhardly know where to beginâwhen trial opened this am saw Shad sitting in back row trying to look inconspicuousâhard to do in his caseâwe talked during recessâShad said he just wanted to see things for himself, etc, so I went about my business with Jakesâthink I nailed the little bastard & jury will hate himâthats what I wantâif jurors hate Jakes theyll hate Masterson too & Addie will prevail.
â
After adjournment Shad came up & introduced me to friend of hisâtall bearded fellow dressed in bohemian fashion wearing floppy hatâreminded me of art professor Id known, in every sense of the word, at Harvardâthree of us chatting away when Shad says, âIm guessing you dont recognize my friendâââno, I dont,â says Iâthen the âprofessorâ speaks up in a different voice & says, âIt is a pleasure to meet you once again, Mr. Phelps. You perhaps remember me from the affair of the Secret Allianceââdamn but I nearly soiled my pantsâSherlock Holmes!
After reminiscing about Alliance & Mary McGinty & late Wm McKinley13 Holmes asked to see the photo of Addieâassured me his interest not prurient (as tho I would care!)âonce I brought the picture he took out a small ruler & measured it very carefullyâafter a long pause he says, very mysteriously, âI doubt this is a Kodakââasked what he meant but he would say no more.
â
Holmes said hed be back in the morning to hear Addies testimonyâtold him shes one of most extraordinary people Ive ever metââI have no doubt she is extraordinary,â he says, smiling like the proverbial Cheshire cat, âbut what I do not know, Mr. Phelps, is whether she is extraordinary in a good or a bad wayââcant say I disagree.
